Here I went a few yards left along a road, then turned right. I was now on Roman Road (also apparently known as Spooky Lane). As it left the village, I chose to ignore the footpath that runs just to the left of the lane (I've used it a couple of times), and continued along the lane through its steep brick-lined cutting and under Devils Bridge. Near the top of the slope the path I mentioned rejoined Roman Road, and I continued along the lane as it then started to descend into the village of Frithsden, ending at a T-junction with the Alford Arms pub on my left.

I crossed the road and continued straight ahead along a broad footpath through Little Frithsden Copse. After almost half a mile, the path came to a private drive in what I think is part of Potten End (it's possibly part of Frithsden), and continued a short way between gardens on the other side. I continued ahead for a few yards between bushes to reach a bridleway, where I turned right to reach part of Berkhamstead Golf Course

The bridleway passed in front of a tee, then continued through trees to the right of a fairway. I then crossed a minor road, the bridleway continuing half-right across another fairway and then running through a belt of trees with fairways either side. Shortly after leaving the golf course, about half a mile from the road crossing, I reached a crossroads of bridleways, where I turned right and headed towards an area called Frithsden Beeches.
