I live in the village of Kensworth on the edge of the Chiltern Hills, just behind Dunstable Downs. I think the Chilterns are a great area for walking - rolling hills, lots of woods, picturesque villages with ancient churches and colourful cottages of brick and flint, plus many sites of historic interest. The wildlife is not bad either - there are Buzzards and magnificent Red Kites overhead, plenty of Fallow and Muntjac Deer, and a fine selection of wildflowers (especially Chalk downland species).
[Update 2/4/10: The Chiltern Society is celebrating the 10th anniversary of their Chiltern Way long-distance path with "The Chiltern Way Walking Festival", running from April - October 2010. It will offer a wide range of walks to suit all ages and abilities, and aims to encourage more people to walk the Chiltern Way. There will be over 60 guided walks on offer during the Walking Festival, in Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Oxfordshire. These range from shorter walks taking a couple of hours, themed walks combined with a visit to a local attraction , and day walks covering 10 -13 miles. All the walks are open to the public and they are all FREE. See www.chilternsociety.org.uk for more details.]
The walks on these pages are generally 12-15 miles as that is the distance I like to walk. There are a few shorter ones in the section of local walks around Kensworth.

Favourite walks in the Chiltern Hills
These are my favourite walks in the Chilterns, usually ones I have done many times. |

Other walks in the Chiltern Hills
These are walks that I have usually only done once, often when exploring parts of the Chilterns I haven't visited before. They are not necessarily any less interesting than my favourite walks, I just don't know them so well and haven't had the chance to 'tweak' or improve them. |

My local walks around Kensworth These are walks I have done numerous times in and around the village of Kensworth where I live. Kensworth is towards the north-eastern end of the Chilterns, close to Dunstable Downs, Whipsnade Zoo and Ivinghoe Beacon. |
