I crossed over and continued down the left side of the High Street. Just after passing the Market Hall, my mobile phone rang - it was my elderly mother phoning to tell me I'd left my sandwiches at home (I think that's only the second time in almost 15 years of walking that I've done that). She could hardly have phoned at a better time, as I was able to quickly call in at the Tesco garage to get something for my lunch. Just after going straight on at a roundabout by the entrance to Tesco (on my left) I crossed back over the road (now London Road West), and went down a footpath that started down a gravel drive that soon turned left and became a track. The path then followed the track across a meadow and back under the A413. I soon reached a gate in the hedge that was now on my right, where another path forked right. I followed this path uphill across two ploughed fields to reach Rodger's Wood. The path continued through a corner of the wood, then continued along tyre tracks through another ploughed field.

Eventually the path reached a hedgerow where it turned half-left alongside the hedge, heading towards Day's Wood (again I have to apologise for the quality of my photos on this section). One or two hundred yards before reaching Day's wood, the path switches to the right of the hedge. The OS Map shows the path going half-right across the field here, but the path seems to run along the hedge and then the wood (on my left) and then go half-right across the field from the next corner of the wood. Over a stile in a hedge, the path turns right for a few yards and then left in a field corner. It follows a fence until that turns slightly right, when the path heads straight downhill through the field to a gate, giving access to Upper Bottom House Farm and Bottom House Farm Lane.

I turned right along the lane for a short distance, then took a farm track on the left (immediately passing through a stable yard) which headed gradually uphill. At a fork I kept right, continuing the long but fairly gentle ascent I kept right again at a second track fork, now with a brick and flint wall on my right. The track now levelled out, and soon turned left - here I went through a gate and continued straight on over an empty paddock or pasture to reach another gate and Botterells Lane. I crossed over and followed a bridleway into Hodgemoor Woods. At a point where the track this followed became roughly surfaced and turned left, I went straight on between two posts and continued through the wood. I was soon close to the eastern edge of the wood on my left, and at some point the bridleway turned left and left the wood but I stayed straight on along what was now a footpath, still staying quite close to the edge of the wood to my left.
